Emaciated Kruger Leopard trying to sneak up on us
The US parks have been working hard to warn people about the risk of injury, which is a
huge cost to the national parks, particularly at a time when their budget has been cut again by
9%. Around the time we were in Yellowstone this year, on the 17 of July, 2011, three people
fell over the Bridal Falls, and only one of the bodies was found. The unfortunate hikers
plunged some 310 feet down the falls after having waded into the Mercedes River. In the
Grand Canyon some 230 odd people are evacuated every year because of injuries.
Between January and August 2011 there were at least 7 bear attacks around North America,
one of them fatal. There were 2 in Yellowstone just before we arrived, including one when a
couple was out hiking. The stories are mixed as to what happened but they were walking
towards a bear that charged them and one of them ended up being killed.
There have been similar stories from elsewhere in the world. There was the story of the
young kids from Eaton in England, together with their father, camping out in Spitzbergen in
Norway. They were attacked by a polar bear and one of the boys from Eaton was killed.
