For example, the
latin1
character set is actually the Windows code page 1252 that
supports West European languages. The default collation for this character set is
latin1_swedish_ci
, which follows Swedish conventions to sort accented characters
(English is handled as you'd expect). This collation is case-insensitive, as indicated by
the letters
ci
. Finally, each character takes up one byte. By comparison, if you use the
ucs2
character set, each character would take up to two bytes of storage.
