In-Depth Information
LYNGBYA AESTUARII LIEMAN EX GOMONT, 1892
Phylum: Cyanobacteria Class: Cyanophyceae
Order: Oscillatoriales Family: Oscillatoriaceae
Distribution: Europe, North America, Central America, South America, Africa,
Southwest Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Paciic Islands,
Indian Ocean Islands
Habitat: Freshwater, brackish water, and marine habitats
Description: The ilaments, which are long, curved, or straight, are in clusters
or layered masses. Young ilaments have thin and smooth sheaths, and in
matured ilaments, the sheath is thick, wide, lamellated, and yellow-brown.
The trichomes (10-20 µm wide), which are cylindrical, are brown-green,
olive-green, dark green, or blue-green. The cells are short and discoid with
small granules.
Compounds and activities: The bioactive compound isolated from this spe-
cies is geosmin (an odorous metabolite). The methanolic extracts of this
species have shown antileishmanial activity against the protozoan parasite,
Leishmania donovaini , which causes skin sores, stuffy nose, and breathing
disorders in humans. Further, the methanolic crude extracts (100 µg/ml) of
this species have shown antibacterial activities against Gram-positive and
Gram-negative bacterial species (Kumar et al., 2012) and antifungal prop-
erties against Candida albicans.
