In-Depth Information
Compounds and activities: The aqueous, methanol, and ethanol extracts of
the dried and fresh lowers of this species have shown signiicant antioxi-
dant activities. The values of H 2 O 2 scavenging activity in terms of percent-
age of inhibition were found to be 54.73, 62.95, and 58.6% for dried lower
extracts, respectively. Values for fresh lower extracts were 51.096, 61.428,
and 58.47%, respectively (Mohan Muruga Raja et al., 2010). The bioac-
tive compound nymphayol (25,26-dinorcholest-5-en-3β-ol) of the lower
extracts of this species possesses antidiabetic, anti-inlammatory, and hepa-
toprotective activities. Other compounds, viz., lavonoids, anthocyanin,
tannins, gallic acid, astragalin, quercetin, and kaempferol have also been
isolated (Nagaveni and Rao, 2010). This plant has also been employed in
traditional medicines for curing liver and urinary disorders, menorrhagia
(prolonged menstrual period), and blennorrhagia (excessive discharge—
gonorrhea), besides serving as an aphrodisiac.
