LUDWIGIA HYSSOPIFOLIA (G. DON)
Phylum: Magnoliophyta Class: Magnoliopsida
Order: Myrtales Family: Onagraceae
Common name: Seed box, primrose willow
Distribution: Africa, Asia, Sri Lanka, India, China
Habitat: Pools, shallow ditches, river edges
Description: This annual herbaceous plant grows to a maximum height
of 3 m. The stem is glabrous, branched, and green to red colored with

green. Flowers are small, axillary, solitary, and sessile with four yellow,
white, orange, or red petals that are ovate or elliptic.
Compounds and activities: An alkaloid compound, 1-[5-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-
1-oxo-2,4-pentadienyl] piperidine (piperine), possessing antitumor and
antibacterial activities was isolated from this species. Piperine exhibited anti-
tumor activity with an IC 50 value of 13.50 µg/disc. Ethyl acetate extract has
been reported to possess antitumor properties (Das et al., 2007) and showed
73.05 and 84.14% inhibition of Agrobacterium tumefaciens -induced crown
