when we opened the ile), we get the picture in Figure 1.15 , where “VAR00001”
(variable one) automatically replaced the grayed out VAR, to indicate that data
values are in that column.
SIDEBAR: THE UBIQUITOUS “DATA ANALYSIS” IN SPSS
There are many things that you can do in SPSS, although most focus on data analysis. This always
starts with the command “Analyze” (see arrow in Figure 1.15 ). Some other things you can do is to
recode the data (say, change your data from minutes to seconds), or view some graphs, and other
things. Some of these will be illustrated later in the topic.
To ind a conidence interval, we pull down the “Analyze” menu ( Figure 1.16 ),
and highlight “Descriptive Statistics,” which immediately displays a sub menu, and
on this sub menu, we highlight “Explore.” See arrows in Figure 1.16 .
