SIDEBAR: SOME EXCEL BASICS
To ind a sample mean of data set (say, 100 data points in the irst 100 cells of column A of an Excel
spreadsheet), we use the Excel command:
=AVERAGE(A1:A100)
This command can be typed in any cell on the spreadsheet, and after you press “Enter,” the
command is replaced by, indeed, the average you are seeking. The same is true for inding a stan-
dard deviation, except that the command is now:
=STDEV(A1:A100)
In the commands, you can use capital letters or small letters; it does not matter at all. Every
Excel command starts with an “=” sign; this tells Excel that a command is coming.
Excel also has very handy type-ahead feature. Simply enter the irst couple of letters of your
command, and voilà, all possible commands starting with those letters appear. Roll over each com-
mand, and descriptive text appears:
