SIDEBAR: DID STUDENT HELP?
William Sealy Gosset (1876-1937) was an English statistician who needed to hide his employment
by the Guinness brewery in London in the early 1900s; they didn't want their competitors to know
that they were making better beer using statistics. So, Dr. Gosset took the pseudonym “Student” to
publish his statistical research.
Apparently, the S-N-K test was based on some earlier work by Student (the “inventor” of the
t-test). However, it is uncertain to what degree Student's work contributed to the development of the
“S-N-K” test, and whether his name should adorn the test's title.
