Factions
Type: Long-Term Complex Survival Variant
Factions is among the most popular Minecraft mini-games, and it's also one of the most in-
depth when it comes to what you can do. The basic idea is that you are in a regular Survival
world with many other players (typically there's no limit to the amount), but you have the
added ability to join a faction.
Factions are essentially teams of players that can claim a “chunk” of land for their faction.
Only players that are members of the faction can open chests or build or destroy anything
by hand on a faction's land. Non-members will find themselves unable to affect another fac-
tion's land, except by using TNT, Lava or Water dropped onto it. Typically, you can't be hurt
on your faction's claimed land as well.
Playing Factions is best done with friends, whether those you know in the real world or those met online,
because a one person faction can't get much done. Find a faction to join, or get some buddies together to
make one of your own!
Land chunks extend from the bedrock to sky and can be claimed by using Power, which
each player has in a certain amount, and some of which is lost when the player dies. Usually
a player starts with 10 Power, claims land using 1 Power and loses 3 Power on death, but
this can be different between servers. When a player joins a faction, their Power is added to
the faction total, allowing the faction to claim more land. Be warned though: when you lose
Power from dying, that Power will be subtracted from your faction's total. If your faction
ever has less power than it has claimed chunks of land, you can start to lose that land. Over
time, your Power can grow back, thankfully, but this happens very, very slowly.
The goal of Factions is to grow your faction, get more money (used to buy items and/or
land), recruit new faction members and declare war against or ally up with other factions.
