of choice for measurement of global cytosolic Ca 2+ , or averaged
Ca 2+ levels throughout the cytoplasm. On the other hand, transient
Ca 2+ release events from the SR (Ca 2+ sparks) require the use of
single-wavelength Ca 2+ indicators such as fl uo-4. A thorough
knowledge of these Ca 2+ signaling processes is imperative for under-
standing mechanisms contributing to cerebral vascular pathologies
such as subarachnoid hemorrhage.
