but it's like no other cave you've ever
seen. Carved deep into the side of a
cliff, it's a three-room luxury apartment
complete with carpet, VCR, kitchen,
and space enough for a family. See

Don Gaspar Inn (Santa Fe, NM;

www.dongaspar.com): Composed of a
cluster of Southwestern-style homes set
in a historic Santa Fe neighborhood,
this inn feels both elegant and friendly.
Rooms boast fireplaces and are set
around lively gardens, with breakfast
served under a peach tree in summer.

Casa de las Chimeneas (Taos, NM;

www.visittaos.com): This 1925 adobe
home has been a model of Southwest-
ern elegance since it opened as a B&B
in 1988. The inn has lovely gardens,
comfortable rooms, and a spa, as well as
complete massage and facial treatments.
The newest rooms have heated Saltillo
tile floors, gas kiva fireplaces, and jetted
tubs. See p. 207.
Bear Mountain Lodge (Silver City,
NM; & 877/620-BEAR [2327] or 575/
538-2538; www.bearmountainlodge.
com): This lodge, owned and managed
by the Nature Conservancy, offers a
nature-lover's paradise. The inn itself
was built in 1928, but the grounds
show evidence of visitors that dates
from 6000 b.c. Nature Conservancy
staff members are on hand to guide
visitors in their bird-, wildlife-, and
plant-viewing pursuits. Rooms are
large, with maple floors, high ceilings,
and French windows. See p. 342.
The Royal Elizabeth (Tucson, AZ;

www.royalelizabeth.com): In downtown
Tucson, just a block from the Temple of
Music and Art, this Territorial-style
historic home is filled with beautiful
Victorian antiques and architectural
details. Guest rooms have lots of touches
not often seen in historic B&Bs, includ-
ing “vintage” phones, TVs, fridges, and
safes. See p. 354
• La Zarzuela (Tucson, AZ; & 888/848-
8225; www.zarzuela-az.com): Perched
high on a hill on the west side of Tuc-
son, this luxurious B&B boasts great
views, colorful decor, and loads of out-
door spaces where guests can relax in
the warmth of the desert. See p. 359.
Across the Creek at Aravaipa Farms
(Winkelman, AZ; & 520/357-6901;
www.aravaipafarms.com): This is the
quintessential desert B&B experience,
though it isn't for everyone. To reach
this inn, you have to drive through Ara-
vaipa Creek (or have the innkeeper
shuttle you across). Exploring the
nearby wilderness area is the main activ-
ity in this remote locale. See p. 361.
Rocamadour Bed & Breakfast for
(Rock) Lovers (Prescott, AZ; & 888/
771-1933 or 928/771-1933): Set amid
the rounded boulders of the Granite
Dells just north of Prescott, this inn
combines a spectacular setting with
French antiques and luxurious accom-
modations. You won't find a more
memorable setting in the state. See

Briar Patch Inn (Sedona, AZ; & 888/

patchinn.com): Oak Creek Canyon,
near Sedona, where you'll find this col-
lection of luxurious cottages, is an oasis
in the desert. Few experiences are more
restorative than breakfast on the shady
