Lead (Pb) is a heavy metal that has been used in many processes, mostly due to its availability and the fact
that it can be poured into molds where it hardens into a solid. It is emitted into the atmosphere as a particulate,
meaning in particle form. Historically, lead was used as an additive in gasoline, and large amounts of lead were
released into the atmosphere through vehicle emissions. Since leaded gasoline is no longer used, the main
source of lead is from metal processing, including smelting, lead-acid battery manufacturers, and waste incin-
erators.
