2NaX + CaSO 4 =
CaX + Na 2 SO 4
(leaching to the soil system)
(b) Reclamation by Acid Formers or Acids
(i) Elemental S and sulfuric acid
Elemental sulfur (S) is oxidized into sulfur dioxide and then sulfur dioxide is
formed into sulfuric acid.
2S + 3O 2
2SO 2
(microbial oxidation)
2SO 2 +H 2 O
H 2 SO 4
Sulfuric acid reacts with sodium compound as follows:
With the presence of lime :
H 2 SO 4 +CaCO 3 = CaSO 4 +CO 2 +H 2 O
2NaX + CaSO 4 =CaX+Na 2 SO 4
(leached)
Without lime :
In this case, sodium is replaced by hydrogen.
NaX + H 2 SO 4 =HX+Na 2 SO 4
(ii) Iron sulfate
FeSO 4 +H 2 O=H 2 SO 4 + FeO
With lime :
H 2 SO 4 +CaCO 3 = CaSO 4 +CO 2 +H 2 O
2NaX + CaSO 4 =CaX+Na 2 SO 4
(leached)
Without lime :
NaX + H 2 SO 4 =2HX+Na 2 SO 4
