by the Malay generations or old folks for ages or
have been practicing since generation. Most of
the informers named rendang , ketupat, nasi impit,

ples of the traditional Malay Hari Raya food that
commonly prepared and served for this religious
celebration. Some of the verbatim answers are as

believed that traditional Hari Raya food comes
from great ancestors and passing down through
generation line and continually being practiced.
Some of the comments received;
“To me… when talking about Malay traditional
Hari Raya food… it is a common dish or foods that
are prepared or cooked by the Malay families for fes-
tive celebrations, although the styles and procedures
of the preparation process may be slightly differ
from one family to another. This can clearly be seen
on rendang. Negeri Sembilan family may prefer the
spicier type of it as opposed to Selangor family. For
whatever they do…… rendang is still rendang and
commonly accepted for the whole nation. Can you
see any house in any states in Malaysia celebrat-
ing Hari Raya without rendang, ketupat or lemang
and kuah kacang. In fact, these are few examples of
Malay traditional Hari Raya foods that are common
and become as family tradition…”
“Malay traditional Hari Raya food based from my
understanding refers to traditional foods or dishes
that are closely related to the Malay Muslim com-
munities during the religious celebration like Aidil
Fitri and Aidil Adha. The foods were specially pre-
pared for the celebration and I could say celebra-
tion slightly dull with the absence of those foods. To
name a few…. chicken and beef rendang, ketupat,
kuah lodeh and peanut sauce are the obvious ones”

“Traditional foods are long time food which was
passed down by our great—great grandparents. Even
though the dishes were common, but the taste and
texture of the dishes were different from one family
to another because each family has its own styles and
procedures of doing it…”
“Based on my observation, Malay traditional Hari
Raya foods are the dishes that the Malays adored
to prepare and served during religious celebration
and it is a too attached to the Malay communities
in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and the
Southern Thailand. In other word, these were the
hereditary food that created and practices, especially
by the Malay Muslim in this region. In sum, I would
say foods like rendang, lemang, ketupat, masak
lodeh, kuah kacang are synonymous with Malay
Muslim festive celebration”

“When we say traditional, it comes from great grand-
parents down to our mothers and to us who practice
the same thing. That is what I understood… Because
that is our family secret and tradition which being
passed and practiced for generations…”

“Looking at my mom and my mother in-law cook-
ing practices… I understand that Malay traditional
Hari Raya foods were usually attached with religious
celebration, which were carried by the Malay gener-
ations and old folks for ages... ketupat, rendang, pea-
nut sauce and kuah lodeh were usually preferred as
the Malay traditional Hari Raya dishes for Malay
especially in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka
and Johor while beside those foods pulut palas, keru-
tuk, nasi dagang and serunding are so intact with
the Malay in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang or east
coast of Malaysia”

DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION
Although using only one question, the find-
ing revealed that women regardless generations
strongly attached to traditional Hari Raya food by
sharing the same view of it. This clearly indicates
that the Malay generations' women have played
their significant role in preserving traditional food
including the Hari Raya dishes by continually
transferring the knowledge and practicing it. The
involvement of grandmother, mothers, daughters
and other family member as can be seen during
Hari Raya food preparation not only strengthen-
ing the understanding, acceptance but developing
a sense of belonging to Malay traditional food
among the young generation. As a conclusion,
the investigation of traditional Malay food in rela-
tion to modernization should continuously be
undertaken.
