Health is wealth: The significance of organic/slow food in the context
of Indian people

ABSTRACT: The word food, according to its ordinary connotation, is applied to any substance which,
when taken into the body of an organism, can be used by that organism in the construction of new tis-
sue. Food forms an important source of energy for human beings unfortunately in our culture the habit
of taking junk food has become daily routine. Consequently, from children to adults, people face serious
health problems. Obesity is one of those health issues which have become a challenge in the current gen-
eration. India is one the country in the world which has already been notorious for maximum number
of patients suffering from diabetes thus nutritious diet is in need. It is said that the organic or slow food
originated in Italy. Slow cooking is all about respecting the food and treatment of ingredients to retain the
maximum natural flavors. It is related with organic cooking also as earlier the grains and vegetables were
grown naturally without the usage of chemicals and pesticides. In today's world it is known as organic
food. Organic food is grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, which can be leached from the soil
and end up in water supplies. With the advancement of science and hunger for making profit, people
started using pesticides and chemicals in order to enhance the productivity of the vegetable crops. On the
contrary, there are people who still counting on slow food or organic food in this fast food era. Eating
slow food means to have good and hygienic food. This practice should be maintained to reduce the effect
of harmful chemicals and pesticides in the life of humans. The present paper discussed about organic food
which could make people healthier and protects their lives by keeping them away from the diseases which
are harmful to their health.

1 INTRODUCTION
It has been the American international giants
such as McDonalds, and Pizza Hut, who have
targeted their restaurants to the Indian families.
Apart from the foreign and Indian fast food chains
setting up shop, there is a range of specialty restau-
rants offering varied fare such as Chinese, Mexi-
can, French, and Italian. These places are full of
junk food and offering variety of fast food, offer-
ing range of items from burgers and pizzas but tar-
geting Indian culinary senses and encouraging fast
food culture in between the Indian families. Food is
now supposed to remedy some of the health prob-
lems that food itself has produced and to serve as
a quick fix for problems such as obesity, malnu-
trition, cardiovascular and oncological disorders,
even sedentary lifestyle and repetitious work.
Prosperity has not produced easy access to and
a larger choice of healthier and better food but a
surfeit of non-nutritive, expensive, often seduc-
tive, cleverly marketed food that has created a
scarcity of food that one can eat and enjoy with-
out preplanning or thinking. As a result, a new
stratum of experts has emerged, advising people

the traditional dhabas (known as Indian restau-
rants on the roadside), potential restaurants in the
customer's colony and some restaurants in five star
hotels until 1995. Having fast food for example
burgers and pizza, was considered an option for
eating outside homes. It was not at all synonymous
with the American concept of fast food as a quick
takeaway bite or a substitute for lunch. However
the year 1996 witnessed a drastic change when it
is considered to be the year of India's entry into
the world food market. International giants such
as McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC),
TGI Friday (TGIF), Dominos, and Pizza Hut all
bombarded the Indian food market. Before these,
UK-based joint called Wimpy's had established
its chain in the country in 1990. By year 1996 it
had about three to four joints established in Delhi.
However, it did not pose much of a threat to
because Wimpy's was looked at more of a hangout
place rather than eating out with family in India.
