quick right onto Lakeview Ave and follow it uphill just over a half-mile to the (usually
locked) iron gate on your left.
Incline Village
One of Lake Tahoe's ritziest communities, Incline Village is the gateway to Diamond Peak
and Mt Rose ski resorts. The latter is a 12-mile drive northeast via Hwy 431 (Mt Rose
Hwy). During summer, the nearby Mt Rose Wilderness ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;
www.fs.usda.gov/ltbmu ) offers miles of unspoiled terrain, including a strenuous 10-mile
round-trip to the summit of majestic Mt Rose (10,776ft). The trail starts from the decept-
ively named Mt Rose Summit parking lot, 9 miles uphill from Incline Village. For a more
mellow meadow stroll that even young kids can handle, pull over a mile or so earlier at
wildflower-strewn Tahoe Meadows ( ) . Stay on the nature loop trails to avoid tramp-
ling the fragile meadows; leashed dogs are allowed.
In summer, you can also visit George Whittell's mansion, Thunderbird Lodge (
800-468-2463; www.thunderbirdlodge.org ; adult/child 6-12yr $39/19; Tue-Sat May-Oct, reserva-
tions required) , where he spent summers with his pet lion, Bill. Tours include a trip down a
600ft tunnel to the card house where George used to play poker with Howard Hughes and
other famous recluses. The only way to get to the lodge is by shuttle bus, leaving from the
helpful in-town Incline Village/Crystal Bay Visitors Bureau (
775-832-1606;
www.gotahoenorth.com ; 969 Tahoe Blvd;
8am-5pm Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm Sat & Sun;
) , or on a
boat cruise or kayak tour ($120 to $135).

Decorated like an arts and crafts-style mountain lodge, every room and lakeside cottage
looks lavish, and the spa is even bigger than the casino. In summer you can sprawl on a
private lakefront beach or in winter let the heated outdoor swimming lagoon warm you up
after a day on the slopes.
