Getting There & Around
Truckee straddles the I-80 and is connected to the lakeshore via Hwy 89 to Tahoe City or
Hwy 267 to Kings Beach. The main drag through downtown Truckee is Donner Pass Rd,
where you'll find the Amtrak train depot and metered on-street parking. Brockway Rd be-
gins south of the river, connecting over to Hwy 267.
Though the Truckee Tahoe Airport has no commercial air service, North Lake Tahoe
Express ( 866-216-5222; www.northlaketahoeexpress.com ; one way/round-trip $45/85)
shuttles to the closest airport at Reno. Buses make several runs daily from 3:30am to mid-
night, serving multiple northern and western shore towns and Northstar and Squaw Valley
ski resorts. Make reservations in advance.
Greyhound ( 800-231-2222; www.greyhound.com ) has twice-daily buses to Reno ($15,
one hour), Sacramento ($40, 2½ hours) and San Francisco ($35, 5½ to six hours). Grey-
hound buses stop at the train depot, as do Amtrak ( 800-872-7245; www.amtrak.com )
Thruway buses and the daily California Zephyr train to Reno ($16, 1½ hours), Sacramento
($41, 4½ hours) and Emeryville/San Francisco ($47, 6½ hours).
Truckee Transit ( 530-587-7451; www.laketahoetransit.com ; single/day pass $2.50/5) links
the Amtrak train depot with Donner Lake hourly from 9am to 5pm Monday through
Saturday. For Tahoe City and other towns on the lake's north, west or east shores, hop on
the TART bus at the train depot. Single-ride TART tickets cost $1.75 (day pass $3.50).
During ski season, additional buses run to many area ski resorts.
NORTHERN SHORE
Northeast of Tahoe City, Hwy 28 cruises through a string of cute, low-key towns, many
fronting superb sandy beaches, with reasonably priced roadside motels and hotels all
crowded together along the lakeshore. Oozing old-fashioned charm, the north shore is a
blissful escape from the teeming crowds of South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City and Truckee,
but still puts you within easy reach of winter ski resorts and snow parks, summertime
swimming, kayaking, hiking trails and more.
