Getting There & Around
Just south of the Hwy 28/89 split, the modern new Tahoe City Transit Center
( www.nextbus.com/tahoe ; 870 Cabin Creek Rd, off Hwy 89) is the main bus terminal, with a com-
fy waiting room. Behind it you'll find trailhead parking for the Tahoe Rim Trail and vari-
ous bike path routes.
With a saucy acronym and reliable service, bike rack-equipped Tahoe Area Rapid
Transit (TART; 530-550-1212; www.laketahoetransit.com ; single/day pass $1.75/3.50) runs
buses along the north shore as far as Incline Village, down the western shore to Ed Z'berg
Sugar Pine Point State Park, and north to Squaw Valley and Truckee via Hwy 89. The
main routes typically depart hourly from about 6am until 6pm daily.
Between June and September, TART also operates the Night Rider , a free local bus ser-
vice connecting Squaw Valley, Tahoe City, Carnelian Bay, Tahoe Vista, Kings Beach,
Crystal Bay and Incline Village hourly from 7pm until about 1am. Two more free night-
time summer-only trolley routes loop between Tahoe City and Tahoma via Sunnyside and
Homewood, and between Northstar, Kings Beach and Crystal Bay, every hour from
6:30pm until midnight or 1am daily.
SQUAW VALLEY
The nirvana of the north shore, Squaw Valley played host to the 1960 Olympic Winter
Games and still ranks among the world's top ski resorts. The stunning setting amid granite
peaks, though, makes it a superb destination in any season, and this deluxe family-friendly
resort stays almost as busy in summer as in winter.
Sights & Activities
Much of the summertime action centers on 8200ft High Camp ( 800-403-0206;
www.squaw.com ; cable-car adult/child 5-12yr/youth 13-22yr $39/15/25, all-access pass $46/19/38;
11am-4:30pm; ) , reached by a dizzying cable car (leashed dogs OK). At the top you'll
find a heated seasonal outdoor swimming lagoon (adult/child $14/8), 18-hole disc-golf
course (free), two high-altitude tennis courts (racquet rentals and ball purchase available),
and a roller-skating rink (adult/child $14/8) that doubles as an ice-skating rink in winter.
Cable-car tickets include admission to the Olympic Museum , which relives those magic
moments from 1960.
