Jumping Frog Jubilee & Calaveras County Fair
Taking inspiration from Mark Twain's famous short story, the Gold Rush-era pioneer town
of Angels Camp offers good old-fashioned family fun over a long weekend in mid-May,
with country-and-western musicians and rodeo cowboys.
Bay to Breakers
On the third Sunday in May, costumed (no nakedness allowed nowadays) joggers and in-
ebriated walkers make the annual pilgrimage from San Francisco's Embarcadero to Ocean
Beach. Watch out for participants dressed as salmon, who run 'upstream' from the finish
line!
Kinetic Grand Championship
Over Memorial Day weekend, this ' triathlon of the art world ' merits a three-day, 42-mile
race from Arcata to Ferndale on the North Coast. Competitors invent human-powered,
self-propelled and sculptural contraptions to make the journey.
June
Once school lets out for the summer, almost everywhere in California gets
busy, from beaches to mountain resorts. But in the deserts, it's just too darn
hot. Some coastal fog lingers ('June gloom').
Pride Month
Out and proud, California's gay pride celebrations take place throughout June, with cos-
tumed parades, coming-out parties, live music, DJs and more. The biggest, bawdiest fest-
ivities are in San Francisco and LA. San Diego celebrates in mid-July.
