You can ski right out the door if you're staying at this rustic mountain lodge near Donner
Summit. Its 7 miles of groomed and tracked trails are great for beginners and intermediate
skiers, and connect to miles of backcountry skiing. Stop by the lodge for ski and snowshoe
rentals, and value-priced ski lessons at all skill levels (sign-up starts at 9am daily).

Run by the nonprofit Tahoe Cross Country Ski Education Association, this center, about 3
miles north of Tahoe City, has 40 miles of groomed tracks (23 trails) that wind through
lovely forest, suitable for all skill levels. Group lessons come with good-value equipment-
rental packages; half-day and twilight trail-pass discounts are also available. Ask about
free skate clinics and beginners' cross-country mid-week lessons.
Dogs are allowed on three trails.
Squaw Valley SKIING, SNOWSHOEING

Although downhill rules the roost at this ex-Olympic resort, 11 miles of groomed track
winding around an alpine meadow will keep beginner-level Nordic skiers busy too. Book
ahead for monthly moonlight snowshoe tours high atop the mountain.
To reach the trailheads at the Resort at Squaw Creek, which supplies cross-country ski,
snowshoe and sled rentals, grab a free shuttle from the main downhill ski area parking lot.
