Northstar California SKIING, SNOWBOARDING
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 530-562-1010; www.northstarcalifornia.com ; 5001 Northstar Dr, off Hwy
267, Truckee; adult/youth 13-22yr/child 5-12yr $116/96/69; 8:30am-4pm; )
An easy 7 miles south of I-80, this hugely popular resort has great intermediate terrain.
Northstar's relatively sheltered location makes it the second-best choice after Homewood
when it's snowing, and the seven terrain parks and pipes are top-ranked. Advanced and ex-
pert skiers can look for tree-skiing challenges on the back of the mountain.
Recent additions to Northstar's 'Village' are making it look a lot more like amenity-rich
Squaw. Weekends get superbusy. Stats: 20 lifts, 2280 vertical feet, 97 runs.
Sugar Bowl SKIING, SNOWBOARDING
( GOOGLE MAP ; 530-426-9000; www.sugarbowl.com ; 629 Sugar Bowl Rd, off Donner Pass Rd,
Norden; adult/youth 13-22yr/child 6-12yr $82/70/30; 9am-4pm; )
Cofounded by Walt Disney in 1939, this is one of the Sierra's oldest ski resorts and a mini-
ature Squaw Valley in terms of variety of terrain, including plenty of exhilarating gullies
and chutes. Views are stellar on sunny days, but conditions go downhill pretty quickly, so
to speak, during stormy weather.
The resort is 4 miles southeast of I-80 (exit Soda Springs/Norden). Stats: 13 lifts, 1500
vertical feet, 103 runs.
Boreal SKIING, SNOWBOARDING
( 530-426-3666; www.rideboreal.com ; 19659 Boreal Ridge Rd, off I-80 exit Castle Peak/Boreal
Ridge Rd, Truckee; adult/child 5-12yr/youth 13-17yr $52/20/43, night-skiing adult/child $26/20,
tubing $30; 9am-9pm; )
Fun for newbies and intermediate skiers, Boreal is traditionally the first resort to open each
year in the Tahoe area. For boarders, there are five terrain parks including a competition-
level 450ft superpipe. Boreal is the only North Tahoe downhill resort besides Squaw that
offers night skiing. Stats: seven lifts, 500 vertical feet, 33 runs.
