Firewood CALIFORNIAN
( 209-728-3248; www.firewoodeats.com ; 420 Main St; mains $7-14; 11am-9pm; )
A rarity in a town with so much historical frill, Firewood's exposed concrete walls and
corrugated metal offer a minimalist respite. When the weather's nice, they open the front
wall for al-fresco dining. There are wines by the glass, half a dozen beers on tap and basic
pub fare, but the wood-fired pizzas are the hallmark.

Casually elegant Grounds does everything competently - expert breakfast foods, a roster
of light lunch mains and weekend dinners of steaks and fresh fish. The herbal ice tea and
fresh vegetarian options are key when the temperatures rise.
