In-Depth Information
The most interesting antique and curiosity shop in Gold Country likely frightens the wigs
off the other dealers in town with its collection of haute gothic house wares, antique occult
goods and flawlessly macabre sensibility. Browsing the old medical instruments, taxi-
dermy, 19th-century photos of corpses and the latest in latex and lace cemetery chic, is tit-
illating.
Placerville Hardware HOMEWARES
( www.placervillehardware.com ; 441 Main St; 8am-6pm Mon-Sat, to 5pm Sun)
The 1852 building, an anchor of Placerville's main drag, is the oldest continuously operat-
ing hardware store west of the Mississippi and a place to pick up a brochure for a self-
guided tour of the town. The store has a smattering of Gold Country bric-a-brac but most
of what clutters the place are bona-fide dry goods, like hammers and buckets.
Placerville Antiques & Collectibles ANTIQUES
( 530-626-3425; 448 Main St; 10am-6pm)
Of Placerville's many antique shops, the collective of dealers in this brightly lit space is a
favorite. Reasonably priced mid-century dishware is a particular strength.
Bookery BOOKS
(326 Main St; 10am-5:30pm Mon-Thu, to 7pm Fri & Sat, to 4pm Sun)
A great used-book store to stock up on vacation pulp.
Placerville News Co BOOKS

This plank-floored bookshop has a wealth of excellent maps, history and local-interest
books.
