miles along the canyon ridge, starting behind the courthouse in town. There are many
more options. Pick up maps and a shuttle ride from the local outfitters. Downieville Visit-
ors' Center (Main St) , open seasonally next the mining equipment in Memorial Park, can
also help.
Downieville Downhill ADVENTURE SPORTS

This world-class mountain-biking trail shoots riders over the Sierra Buttes and a molar-rat-
tling 4000ft down into Downieville. There are plenty of other scenic biking trails to ex-
plore, including Chimney Rock , Empire Creek and Rattlesnake Creek , but this route is
the reason why pro-riders arrive in August for the Downieville Classic , a mix of cross-
country and downhill racing and general revelry.
Local outfitters run hourly shuttles to the start.

Yuba Expeditions is run by Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, a nonprofit in the center of the
trail-bike scene. Non-bikers will find them helpful with maps and general trail advice.

In downtown Downieville, the soft roar of the rapids lull saddle-sore bikers to sleep in sev-
eral small B&Bs. More secluded options are along Hwy 49 east of town. Find food at the
intersection of Main and Commercial Sts. Most places are closed in winter.
