In-Depth Information
( 530-265-2239; www.broadstreetinn.com ; 517 W Broad St; r incl breakfast $115-125; )
This six-room inn is a favorite because it keeps things simple. (No weird old dolls, no yel-
lowing lace doilies.) The rooms are modern, brightly furnished and elegant. A good value.
Red Castle Historic Lodgings B&B
( 530-265-5135; www.redcastleinn.com ; 109 Prospect St; r $155-210; )
In a city of B&Bs this is the granddaddy - the first in Nevada City and one of the oldest in
the state. The red-brick building sits atop a hill a short walk from town. Inside the Gothic
Revival exterior are well-appointed Victorian details down to the elevated beds and the
breakfast selection. Most private is the Garden Room.
Northern Queen Inn MOTEL, CABINS
( 530-265-5824; www.northernqueeninn.com ; 400 Railroad Ave; r $90-140; )
With a wide range of options - from basic queen rooms to two-story chalets - this hotel
might be a bit dated, but the cabins, with small kitchens, are a good deal for small groups
and families.
Eating
In a town of holistic thinkers, it's no surprise most menus emphasize organic and seasonal
ingredients. The options are mostly clustered in a three-block radius on Commercial and
Broad Sts.
Café Mekka CAFE
(
530-478-1517; 237 Commercial St; meals $5-15;
7am-10pm Mon-Thu, to midnight Fri, 8am-mid-
night Sat, to 10pm Sun)
Decorated in a style best described as 'whorehouse baroque,' this charmer serves coffee
and beer through the day, along with sandwiches, pizzas and delectable desserts. Listen for
live folk music some nights.
