The fact that Auburn minted itself the 'Endurance Sport Capital of the World' will give
you a sense of how good the area is for cycling, trail running and other heart-pounding
activities. See www.auburnendurancecapital.com for events.
Placer County Museum MUSEUM
( www.placer.ca.gov ; 101 Maple St; 10am-4pm)
The 1st floor of the domed 1898 Placer County Courthouse ( 8am-5pm) has Native
American artifacts and displays of Auburn's transportation heritage. It's the easiest mu-
seum to visit and gives a good overview of area history; there's also the glitter of the mu-
seum's gold collection.
Bernhard Museum Complex MUSEUM
(291 Auburn-Folsom Rd; entry by donation; 11am-4pm Tue-Sun)
This museum, built in 1851 as the Traveler's Rest Hotel, exhibits depictions of typical
19th-century-farm family life. Volunteers in period garb ham it up.
Gold Country Museum MUSEUM
(1273 High St; 11am-4pm Tue-Sun)
Toward the back of the fairgrounds, the Gold Rush history includes a reconstructed mine
and gold panning, all great for kids.
Joss House MUSEUM
( 530-823-0373; 200 Sacramento St; entry by donation; 10am-3pm 1st Sat of month)
Built by the Yue family in the 1920s, this clapboard residence stands on what was known
as Chinese Hill, one of many small-town Chinese communities established during the
Gold Rush. After a 'mysterious' fire ripped through the Chinese settlement, the family con-
verted their home into a public space for worship, seasonal boarders and a school. Grand-
son Richard is on hand to tell the full story.
