In-Depth Information
( 559-348-5520; www.picadillyinn.com ; 2305 W Shaw Ave; r $89-159; )
This is Fresno's nicest option, with a lovely pool, big rooms and tons of amenities. Ask for
a room with a fireplace to cuddle by in winter. If they are full, try one of the other proper-
ties, both by the airport: the Piccadilly Inn Express and the Piccadilly Inn Airport.
Dusty Buns Bistro AMERICAN
( www.dustybuns.com ; 608 E Weldon Ave; mains $6-7; 11am-9pm Mon-Sat)
This restaurant began as a food truck dishing out sandwiches on buns, made from local in-
gredients, single handedly actualizing Fresno's modern foodie culture. The young couple
in the drivers' seat still makes the rounds in the truck. Try the Dusty Bun, a brilliant little
number of chipotle roast chicken and slaw.
Sam's Italian Deli & Market DELI
( www.samsitaliandeli.com ; 2415 N First St; mains $5-9; 9am-6pm Mon-Sat)
This Italian market and deli is the real deal, stacking up the 'New Yorker' pastrami and
some mean prosciutto and mozzarella.
Chicken Pie Shop AMERICAN
(Grandmarie's Chicken Pie Shop;
559-237-5042; 861 E Olive Ave; mains $7-8.45;
7am-7pm Mon-
Fri, 8am-2pm Sat & Sun)
With a ladle of gravy and a flaky crust, the beautiful chicken-stuffed pies at this Tower
District institution bear no resemblance to the frozen, soggy mess of your childhood,
though the nostalgic decor might.
Peeve's Public House & Local Market AMERICAN
( peevespub.com ; 1243 Fulton Mall; mains $10;
11am-11pm Mon-Thu, to 1am Fri, 9am-1am Sat,
9am-9pm Sun)
Located in the desolate Fulton Mall in downtown, Peeve's is leading Fresno's new wave of
urban-rural revitalization by celebrating hyper-local food. Every ingredient in their three
daily offerings (burgers and salads, usually), the dozen microbrews ($5 to $6), and the ex-
tensive wine list are pure Fresno County. A small market next door offers some local pro-
ducers' best.
