Stockton
Stockton has had more than its share of ups and downs. Hit hard by housing foreclosures
and almost a billion dollars in debt, in 2012, it became the largest US city to file for bank-
ruptcy.
What remains of its proud past as a major inland port, the main supply hub for gold
rushers, and a leading player in shipbuilding and modern transport, is today blighted by
crime-ridden streets and crumbling facades. Still, the downtown and waterfront redevelop-
ment is one of the valley's more promising grassroots efforts and warrants a brief detour.
A block east of Weber Point, the Department of Tourism (
209-938-1555;
www.visitstockton.org ; 125 Bridge Pl;
9am-5pm Mon-Fri) has complete information about the
goings-on in town.
