Getting There & Around
Greyhound ( www.greyhound.com ) buses stop at 11.20am and 7.15pm at the Amtrak
station ( www.amtrak.com ; 450 Orange St) heading to San Francisco ($60, five hours 40
minutes), Reno ($74, 10 hours), Los Angeles ($109, 11 hours) and cities in between.
The platform is unattended so purchase tickets in advance or on board from the driver.
Amtrak trains on the Coast Starlight line depart Chico at very inconvenient hours - at
1:47am for Redding ($20, one hour) and at 3:50am for Sacramento ($26, 2½ hours).
Amtrak's connecting buses head to Oroville, Sacramento, Stockton, Fresno and
Bakersfield, departing at reasonable hours four times daily, but require booking a con-
necting train.
B-Line (Butte Regional Transit; 530-342-0221; www.blinetransit.com ; 326 Huss Lane; adult/
child $1.40/1) handles all buses throughout Butte County, and can get you around Chico and
down to Oroville in 50 minutes.
Car is the easiest way to get around, but Chico is one of the best biking towns in the
country. Rent from Campus Bicycles ( www.campusbicycles.com ; 330 Main St; half/full day
$20/35) .
Red Bluff
The smoldering streets of Red Bluff - one of California's hottest towns due to the hot-air
trap of the Shasta Cascades - are of marginal interest in themselves, but a glimpse towards
the mountain-dominated horizon reveals what brings most travelers this way.
