In-Depth Information
( 530-342-2285; 1444 Park Ave; burgers $4.25-6.25; 10:30am-9pm Tue-Sat)
Simply put, the Nobby Burger, topped with a crispy fried blanket of cheese and crispier,
thick bacon, is a heart attack. Worth it? Probably. This place is so tiny, you'll likely have to
stand. Cash only.
Celestino's Live from New York Pizza PIZZA
(101 Salem St; pizzas from $14; 10:30am-10pm Sun-Thu, to 11pm Fri & Sat)
One of the best imitations of 'real' New York pizza in Northern California, they serve thin-
crust pies and playfully themed variations such as the meaty Godfather. The slice-n-a-soda
lunch special for $4 is a good deal.
Sin of Cortez CAFE
( www.sinofcortez.com ; 2290 Esplanade; mains $6-16; 7am-2pm; )
The service won't win awards for speed, but this local favorite draws both vegetarian and
omnivorous mobs with its burly breakfast plates. Order anything with the soy chorizo.
Shubert's Ice Cream & Candy ICE CREAM
( www.shuberts.com ; 178 E 7th St; 9:30am-10pm Mon-Fri, from 11am Sat & Sun)
Five generations of Shuberts have produced delicious homemade ice cream and chocolates
for more than 75 years at this beloved Chico landmark.
El Paisa Taco Truck MEXICAN
(cnr 8th & Pine Sts; mains $1.50-5; 11am-8pm)
Debate about which of Chico's taco trucks is best can quickly lead to fisticuffs, but the
smoky carnitas (braised pork) tacos are most certainly a broke college kid's dream.
Sierra Nevada Taproom & Restaurant BREWPUB
( www.sierranevada.com ; 1075 E 20th St; mains $10-32; 11am-9pm Sun-Thu, to 10pm Fri & Sat; )
What's on tap is the main draw at the on-site restaurant of the Sierra Nevada Brewery . This
genuine Chico destination is great for downing brews but lacks ambience - the huge, loud
dining room is basically a factory cafeteria. Still, it has better-than-average pub food and
superbly fresh ales and lagers, some not available elsewhere.
