DON'T MISS
CALIFORNIA STATE FAIR
For two weeks in late July, the California State Fair ( GOOGLE MAP ; 916-263-3247;
www.bigfun.org ; 1600 Exposition Blvd; adult/child $12/8) fills the Cal Expo, east of I-80 on the
north side of the American River, with a small city of cows and carnival rides. It's likely the
only place on earth where you can plant a redwood tree, watch a pig give birth, ride a
roller coaster, catch some barrel racing and taste exquisite Napa vintages within one (ex-
hausting) afternoon. Make time to see some of the auctions ($500 for a dozen eggs!) and
the interactive ag-exhibits run by the University of California Davis. Hotels near Cal Expo
run regular shuttles to the event.
