At Old Sac's north end is this impressive collection of railcars and locomotives from mini-
ature to true scale. While the candy-coated recounting of the struggles of those who laid
the track is unsettling, the fully outfitted Pullman sleeper and vintage diner cars will thrill
rail fans. Board a restored passenger train (adult/child $10/5) from the Sacramento South-
ern Railroad ticket office, across the plaza on Front St, for a 40-minute jaunt along the
river. Train rides run hourly on weekends from April to September.

Tower District
South of Midtown, at the corner of Broadway and 16th St, the Tower District is dominated
by
Tower Theatre
, a beautiful 1938 art-deco movie palace easy to spot on the way into
town. From the theater, head east on Broadway to a stretch of the city's most eclectic and
affordable ethnic eateries. The
Tower Records
chain started here in 1960 and closed in
2006, a digital music casualty, but the original neon sign survives.
Activities
river system, is surely Sacramento's most appealing natural feature. It's one of the most
extensive riparian habitats in the continental US, scored by a network of trails and picnic
areas. It's accessible from Old Sac by taking Front St north until it becomes Jiboom St and
crosses the river, or by the Jiboom St exit off I-5/Hwy 99. The lovely, paved
