ALPEN CELLARS
Alpen Cellars WINERY
( 530-266-9513; www.alpencellars.com ; 10am-4pm summer, by appointment Oct-May)
Jaunt over to little-known, utterly picturesque Alpen Cellars. Specializing in riesling,
gewürtztraminer, chardonnay and pinot noir, the vineyard is open for tours, tastings and
picnicking on idyllic riverside grounds. To get there from Weaverville, take Hwy 3 for about
35 miles to the north end of Trinity Lake (5 miles past Trinity Center), then turn right on
East Side Rd; 8 miles further, head left on East Fork Rd and continue for 2 miles.
Scott Valley
North of Trinity Lake, Hwy 3 climbs along the gorgeous eastern flank of the Trinity Alps
Wilderness to Scott Mountain Summit (5401ft) and then drops gracefully down into verd-
ant Scott Valley, a bucolic agricultural area nestled between towering mountains. There are
good opportunities for hiking, cycling and mountain-biking, or taking horse trips to moun-
tain lakes. For a bit of history, pick up the Trinity Heritage Scenic Byway brochure from
the Weaverville ranger station before taking this world-class drive.
Etna (population 737), toward the north end of the valley, is known by its residents as
'California's Last Great Place,' and they might be right. It hosts a fantastic Bluegrass
Festival at the end of July and the tiny Etna Brewing Company ( www.etnabrew.net ; 131
Callahan St; brewery tours free; pub 11am-4pm Tue, to 8pm Wed & Thu, to 9pm Fri & Sat, to 7pm
Sun, tours by appointment) offers delicious beers and pub grub. If you're sticking around, try
the immaculate 10-room Motel Etna ( 530-467-5338; 317 Collier Way; s/d $50/60) . Scott
Valley Drug ( www.scottvalleydrug.com ; 511 Main St; Mon-Sat) serves up old-fashioned ice-
cream sodas. If you're in town in summer and see lots of dirty people with backpacks,
these are folks taking a break from hiking the nearby Pacific Crest Trail - Etna is a favor-
ite pit stop.
Beyond Etna Fort Jones (population 839) is just 18 miles from Yreka. The visitors
center ( 530-468-5442; 11943 Main St; 10am-5pm Tue-Sat, noon-4pm Sun) sits at the back
of the Guild Shop mercantile. Down the street, a small museum
