McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park
This beautiful state park ( GOOGLE MAP ; 530-335-2777, summer reservations
800-444-7275; www.parks.ca.gov ; day-use/campsites $8/25; ) lies southeast of McCloud, near
the crossroads of Hwys 89 and 299 from Redding. The 129ft falls cascade with the same
volume of water - 100 million gallons per day - and at the same temperature - 42°F (5°C)
- year-round. Clear, lava-filtered water surges over the top and also from springs in the
waterfall's face. Teddy Roosevelt loved this place; he called it the 'Eighth Wonder of the
World.'
A lookout point beside the parking lot also has trails going up and down the creek from
the falls. (Be careful of your footing here; in 2011 there was a fatality in the park when
someone slipped on the rocks.) The nature trail heading downstream leads to Lake Britton;
other hiking trails include a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. The scenes in the film Stand
By Me (1986) where the boys dodge the train were shot on the Lake Britton Bridge trestle
in the park.
