In-Depth Information
As you follow winding Dunsmuir Ave north over the freeway, look for this park with its
local native gardens and a vintage steam engine in front. A forest path from the riverside
gardens leads to a small waterfall, but Mossbrae Falls are the larger and more spectacular
of Dunsmuir's waterfalls.
To reach the falls, park by the railroad tracks (there's no sign), then walk north along the
right-hand side of the tracks for a half-hour until you reach a railroad bridge built in 1901.
Backtracking slightly from the bridge, you'll find a little path going down through the
trees to the river and the falls. Be extremely careful of trains as you walk by the tracks -
the river's sound can make it impossible to hear them coming.

Dunsmuir Lodge MOTEL
( 530-235-2884; www.dunsmuirlodge.net ; 6604 Dunsmuir Ave; r $79-153; )
Toward the south entrance of town, the simple but tastefully renovated rooms have hard-
wood floors, big chunky blond-wood bed frames and tiled baths. A grassy communal pic-
nic area overlooks the canyon slope. It's a peaceful little place and very good value.
Cave Springs MOTEL, CABIN
( 530-235-2721; www.cavesprings.com ; 4727 Dunsmuir Ave; cabins from $76, r from $99; )
These creekside cabins seem unchanged since the 1920s even though the interiors were re-
cently updated. They are rustic - very rustic - but their location, nestled on a piney crag
above the Sacramento River, is lovely and ideal for anglers. At night the sound of rushing
water mingles with the haunting whistle of trains.
The motel rooms are bland, but they're up to modern standards and have more amenit-
ies.
