Sights & Activities
To head out hiking on your own, first stop by the ranger station or the visitors center for
excellent free trail guides, including several access points along the Pacific Crest Trail .
Gorgeous Black Butte , a striking, treeless, black volcanic cone, rises almost 3000ft. The
2.5-mile trail to the top takes at least 2½ hours for the round-trip. It's steep and rocky in
many places, and there is no shade or water, so don't hike on a hot summer day. Wear
good, thick-soled shoes or hiking boots and bring plenty of water. If you want an easier
amble, try the 10-mile Sisson-Callahan National Recreation Trail , a partially paved trail
that affords great views of Mt Shasta and the jagged Castle Crags, following a historic
route established in the mid-1800s by prospectors, trappers and cattle ranchers to connect
the mining town of Callahan with the town of Sisson, now called Mt Shasta City.
Mt Shasta City Park & Sacramento River Headwaters PARK
(Nixon Rd)
Off Mt Shasta Blvd, about a mile north of downtown, the headwaters of the Sacramento
River gurgle up from the ground in a large, cool spring. It's about as pure as water can get
- so bring a bottle and have a drink. The park also has walking trails, picnic spots, sports
fields and courts, and a children's playground.
Sisson Museum MUSEUM

A half-mile west of the freeway, this former hatchery headquarters is full of curious moun-
taineering artifacts and old pictures. The changing exhibitions highlight history - geologic-
al and human - but also occasionally showcase local artists. Next door, the oldest operat-
ing hatchery in the West maintains outdoor ponds teeming with rainbow trout that will
eventually be released into lakes and rivers.
