frill. There are nice little touches, like bath salts and candy dishes. In the morning, expect
homemade muffins and jam as part of the full breakfast.
To eat, head directly to the relatively new Lassen Ale Works (724 Main St; mains $9-21;
11am-10pm Mon-Thu, 11am-11pm Fri & Sat, 9am-10pm Sun) in the beautifully renovated circa
1862 Pioneer Saloon. It's known for its fish and chips, but everything from steaks to the
Reuben sandwiches are fresh and as good as the service. Try one of the seven signature
brews like the Pioneer Porter or Almanor Amber. Unfortunately for those traveling with
kids, you must be 21 years old or over to eat here.
Sage Stage ( 530-233-6410; www.sagestage.com ) runs buses to Redding via Alturas

Eagle Lake
Those who have the time to get all the way out to Eagle Lake, California's second-largest
natural lake, are rewarded with one of the most striking sites in the region: a stunningly
blue jewel on the high plateau. From late spring until fall this lovely lake, about 15 miles
northwest of Susanville, attracts a smattering of visitors who come to cool off, swim, fish,
boat and camp. On the south shore, you'll find a pristine 5-mile recreational trail and
several busy campgrounds ( reservations 877-444-6777; www.recreation.gov ; tent sites $20,
RV sites $30-60) administered by Lassen National Forest and the Bureau of Land Man-
agement (BLM; 530-257-5381) . Campgrounds for tent camping include Merrill, Aspen,
Christie and Eagle. Most of them are fairly scrubby, considering how lovely the lake is,
though there are some highly sought-after lakeside sites in Merrill. Merrill and Eagle also
have RV sites. Nearby Eagle Lake Marina ( www.eaglelakerecreationarea.com ) offers hot
showers, laundry and boat rentals. It also can help you get out onto the lake with a fishing
license.
Eagle Lake RV Park ( 530-825-3133; www.eaglelakeandrv.com ; 687-125 Palmetto Way;
tent/RV sites $25/36.50, cabins $37-100; ) , on the western shore, and Mariners Resort (
530-825-3333; Stones Landing; RV sites $37-40, cabins $110-190) , on the quieter northern
shore, both rent boats.
