About half of the campgrounds around the lake are open year-round. The lake's many fin-
gers have a huge range of camping, with lake and mountain views, and some of them are
very remote. Free boat-in sites are first-come, first-served - sites without boat launches
will be far less busy.
Camping outside organized campgrounds requires a campfire permit, available free
from any USFS office.

Primarily an RV campground, it also rents houseboats (note that off-season rates are al-
most 50% lower) and the busy marina offers parasailing and fishing-boat rentals. A little
cafe (
8am-3pm) sits lakefront. It's off Shasta Caverns Rd, next to the lake.

East of I-5 in Lakehead, at the north end of the lake, this very popular, family-oriented
campground has cabins, a country store and a marina renting watercraft and houseboats.

On the western side of I-5, this lakeside vacation park has a restaurant and tavern, horse-
shoes and basic cabins.
MT LASSEN & AROUND
The dramatic crags, volcanic formations and alpine lakes of Lassen Volcanic National Park
seem surprisingly untrammeled when you consider they are only a few hours from the Bay
Area. Snowed in through most of winter, the park blossoms in late spring. While it is only
50 miles from Redding, and thus close enough to be enjoyed on a day trip, to really do it
