smoked pork chops with mustard herb reduction for dinner, but don't skip dessert - the
chocolate souffle in particular is to die for. Top it off with a microbrew.
Jack's Grill STEAK
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; tel, info 530 241 9705; www.jacksgrillredding.com ; 1743 California St;
mains $15-36; 5-11pm, bar from 4pm Mon-Sat)
This funky little old-time place doesn't look so inviting - the windows are blacked out and
it's dark as a crypt inside - but the popularity with locals starts with its stubborn ain't-
broke-don't-fix-it ethos and ends with its steak - a big, thick, charbroiled decadence.
Regulars start lining up for dinner at 4pm, when cocktail hour begins. There are no re-
servations, so it easily takes an hour to get a seat.
Alehouse Pub BAR
( GOOGLE MAP ; www.reddingalehouse.com ; 2181 Hilltop Dr; mains $8-16;
3pm-midnight Mon-
Thu, to 1:30am Fri & Sat)
Too bad for fans of the cheap stuff, this local pub keeps a selection of highly hopped beers
on tap and sells T-shirts emblazoned with 'No Crap on Tap.' It's a fun local place that gets
packed after Redding's young professionals get out of work.
