DON'T LEGALIZE IT: ECONOMICS OF HUMBOLDT HERB
With an estimated one-fifth of Humboldt County's population farming its world-famous
weed, a good chunk of the economy here has run, for decades, as bank-less, tax-evading
and cash only - but it's also been prosperous enough to strongly support many local
businesses. Back in the 1990s farmers could expect to get around $6000 a pound for
their crops but since medical marijauna has become legal the price has dropped radically,
to just above $1000 per pound. So what happens if pot is legalized as it's expected to by
2016? Prices may plummet even further and everything from local restaurants to clothing
stores will suffer for it. So yeah, those 'Save Humboldt County Keep Pot Illegal' bumper
stickers you may see around town, are serious.
Sleeping
Arcata has affordable but limited lodgings. A cluster of hotels - Comfort Inn, Hampton
Inn etc - is just north of town, off Hwy 101's Giuntoli Lane. There's cheap camping fur-
ther north at Clam Beach.

)
Serviceable rooms in a standard-issue motel, with some noise from Hwy 101. It's more ex-
pensive than the chain motels but has the advantage of being in town.
