Renowned as the best sushi in Humboldt County, dine in a tiny, packed room, where con-
versation with the neighboring table is inevitable. A menu of sushi and sashimi is rounded
out by grilled scallops and fern-tip salad. North Coast travelers who absolutely need sushi
should phone ahead for a reservation.
Waterfront Café Oyster Bar SEAFOOD
(102 F St; mains lunch $8-17, dinner $15-24; 9am-9pm)
With a nice bay view and baskets of steamed clams, fish and chips, oysters and chowder,
this is a solid bayside lunch for the atmosphere more than anything. A top spot for Sunday
brunch, with jazz and Ramos fizzes.
Restaurant 301 CALIFORNIAN

Eureka's top table, romantic, sophisticated 301 serves a contemporary Californian menu,
using produce from its organic gardens (tours available). Mains are pricey, but the prix-
fixe menu is a good way to taste local food in its finest presentation. The eight-course
Chef's Grand Menu ($96) is only worthy of really special occasions.

The roster of the regular brews at Eureka's colorful brewery might not knock the socks off
a serious beer snob (and can't hold a candle to some of the others on the coast), but high-
lights include the Downtown Brown Ale, Great White and Lost Coast Pale Ale. After
downing a few pints, the fried pub grub starts to look pretty tasty.
