Garberville is lined with motels and many of them, although serviceable, rent out long-
term and can house questionable characters. South of town, Benbow Inn blows away the
competition. For cheaper lodging try Humboldt Redwoods Inn (
707-923-2451;
www.humboldtredwoodsinn.com ; 987 Redwood Dr; r $65-110;
) , the least dodgy of the
low-budget places.
Riverwood Inn INN
( 707-943-1766; www.riverwoodinn.info ; 2828 Avenue of the Giants, Phillipsville; r $80-98; )
Six miles north of Garberville is this rockin', vintage 1937, all-American roadhouse with a
big bar at the front, an OK Mexican restaurant at the back and simple lodge rooms (some
with lovely terraces) downstairs. There's live music most weekend nights when you can
get rowdy with the locals and traveling motorbikers then sleep it off downstairs.
