Eating
It'd be a crime to eat the fast-food junk located off the highway; Ukiah has a burgeoning
food scene that pairs nicely with the surrounding wine country.
Schat's Courthouse Bakery & Cafe CAFE
( www.schats.com ; 113 W Perkins St; lunch mains $3-7, dinner mains $8-14;
5:30am-6pm Mon-Fri, to
5pm Sat)
Founded by Dutch bakers, Schat's makes a dazzling array of chewy, dense breads, sand-
wiches, wraps, big salads, delish hot mains, full breakfasts and homemade pastries.
Ukiah Farmers Market MARKET
(cnr School & Clay Sts; 9am-noon Sat)
The market offers farm-fresh produce, crafts and entertainment.
Kilkenny Kitchen CAFE
( www.kilkennykitchen.com ; 1093 S Dora St; sandwiches $8; 10am-3pm Mon-Fri; )
Tucked into a neighborhood south of downtown, county workers love this chipper yellow
place for the fresh rotation of daily soups and sandwich specials (a recent visit on a
blazing-hot day found a heavenly, cold cucumber dill soup). The salads - like the pear,
walnut and blue cheese - are also fantastic, and there's a kid's menu.
Saucy PIZZA
(
707-462-7007; 108 W Satandley St; pizzas $11-19;
11:30am-9pm Mon-Thu, to 10pm Fri,
noon-10pm Sat)
Yes there are arty pizzas with toppings like Calabrian love sausage (really), fennel pollen
and almond basil pesto but there are also amazing soups, salads, pastas and starters -
Nana's meatballs are to die for and the 'kicking' minestrone lives up to its name. The small-
town ambience is slightly chic but boistrous at the same time.
