which produces unusual blends and interesting varietals (including good Chenin Blanc)
and 100% Cabernet Franc. Vineyards are all-organic; the sun provides power. Picnic free
(call ahead and buy a bottle) beneath weeping willows shading happy goats. Bottles are
$20 to $60.

Ascend Mt Veeder for drop-dead vistas, 1800ft above the valley, at Napa's oh-so-swank,
first-ever organically farmed, LEED gold-certified winery, partly owned by former San
Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom. Hawks ride thermals at eye level as you sample bright
Sauvignon Blanc and luscious Cabernet Sauvignon that's more Bordelaise in style than
Californian. Reservations required. Bottles cost $44 to $80.

High atop Howell Mountain, Ladera makes wonderful, little-known, estate-grown Caber-
net Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc in a well-off-the-beaten-path, 1886, stone-walled
winery, one of Napa's oldest - ideal when you want to escape the crowds. Bottle are $28 to
$85.
