THE CULINARY COAST
Pescadero is renowned for Duarte's Tavern, but loads of other scrumptious tidbits are
very close by.
Arcangeli Grocery/Norm's Market (Norm's Market; www.normsmarket.com ; 287 Stage Rd,
Pescadero; sandwiches $6.50-8.75; 10am-6pm Mon-Thu, 9am-6pm Sat & Sun) Create a picnic
with made-to-order deli sandwiches, homemade artichoke salsa and a chilled bottle of
California wine. And don't go breezing out the door without nabbing a crusty loaf of the
famous artichoke garlic herb bread, fresh-baked almost hourly.
Harley Farms Cheese Shop ( 650-879-0480; www.harleyfarms.com ; 250 North St, Pesca-
dero; 10am-5pm Wed-Sun; ) Follow the cool wooden cut-outs of the goat and the
Wellington-shod girl with the faraway eyes. Another local food treasure with creamy artis-
anal goat cheeses festooned with fruit, nuts and a rainbow of edible flowers. Weekend
farm tours by reservation, and a new shop selling goat-milk body products and non-toxic
paint. Splurge for a seat at one of the monthly five-course farm dinners in the restored
barn's airy hayloft.
Pie Ranch ( www.pieranch.org ; 2080 Cabrillo Hwy, Pescadero; noon-6pm Thu & Fri, 10am-6pm
Sat & Sun; ) Hit the brakes for this roadside farmstand in a wooden barn, and pick up
fresh produce, eggs and coffee, plus amazing pies made with the fruit grown here. The
historic pie-slice-shaped farm is a nonprofit dedicated to leadership development and
food education for urban youth. Check the website for details on its monthly farm tours
and barn dances. Located 11 miles south of Pescadero Creek Rd.
Swanton Berry Farm ( 650-469-8804; www.swantonberryfarm.com ; Coastways Ranch, 640
Cabrillo Hwy, Pescadero; 10am-4pm Fri-Sun) To get a better appreciation of the rigors and
rewards of farm life, smoosh up your shirtsleeves and harvest some fruit at this organic
pick-your-own farm near Año Nuevo. It's a union outfit (operated by Cesar Chavez's Un-
ited Farm Workers), with buckets of seasonal kiwis and olallieberries ripe for the plucking.
Its farm stand and strawberry u-pick (8am-5pm) is 8.5 miles further south near Daven-
port.
Bonnie Doon Vineyard ( 831-471-8031; www.bonnydoonvineyard.com ; 450 Hwy 1, Davenport;
11am-5pm Thu-Mon) Round out your palate with a flight ($10 to $20) at the new roadside
tasting room of Randall Grahm's acclaimed winery, where Edison lights and rough-hewed
wooden tables entice you to sample a Cigare Volant (yes, that's a flying cigar) and other
bottles made with lesser-known varietals.
