parks of sky-blotting redwood canopy, city dwellers come here to slow down and smell the
sea breeze wafting over fields of bushy artichokes.
Sights & Activities
A number of pretty sand beaches speckle the coast, though one of the most interesting
places to stop is Pebble Beach , a tide-pool jewel a mile and a half south of Pescadero
Creek Rd (and part of Bean Hollow State Beach). As the name implies, the shore is awash
in bite-sized eye candy of agate, jade and carnelians, and sandstone troughs are pock-
marked by groovy honeycombed formations called tafoni. Bird-watchers enjoy Pescadero
Marsh Reserve , across the highway from Pescadero State Beach, where numerous species
feed year-round.
Pigeon Point Light Station LIGHTHOUSE
( 650-879-2120; www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=533 )
Five miles south along the coast, the 115ft Light Station is one of the tallest lighthouses on
the West Coast. The 1872 landmark had to close access to the upper tower when chunks of
its cornice began to rain from the sky (restoration is in progress), but the beam still flashes
brightly and the bluff is a prime though blustery spot to scan for breaching gray whales.
The hostel here is one of the best in the state.
Butano State Park PARK
( 650-879-2040; per car $10, camping $35 Apr-Nov)
About 5 miles south of Pescadero, bobcats and full-throated coyotes reside discreetly in
2800 acres of dense redwood canyon. From Hwy 1, take Gazos Creek Rd.
