WHERE THE EARTH MOVED
Curious to find a few places where the earth shook? Visit these notorious spots in and
around the Bay Area:
Earthquake Trail , at Point Reyes National Seashore, shows the effects of the big one in
1906.
Cypress Freeway Memorial Park , at 14th St and Mandela Parkway, commemorates the
forty-two people that died and those who helped rescue survivors when the Cypress Free-
way collapsed in West Oakland, one of the most horrifying and enduring images of the
1989 Loma Prieta quake.
In the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park ( 831-763-7062; www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=666 ;
parking $8), near Aptos in Santa Cruz County, a sign on the Aptos Creek Trail marks the
actual epicenter of the Loma Prieta quake, and on the Big Slide Trail a number of fissures
can be spotted.
At UC Berkeley, the Hayward Fault runs just beneath Memorial Stadium .
