As the birthplace of the free speech and disability rights movements, and the home of the
hallowed halls of the University of California, Berkeley is no bashful wallflower. A na-
tional hotspot of (mostly left-of-center) intellectual discourse and one of the most vocal
activist populations in the country, this infamous college town has an interesting mix of
graying progressives and idealistic undergrads. It's easy to stereotype 'Beserkeley' for
some of its recycle-or-else PC crankiness, but the city is often on the forefront of environ-
mental and political issues that eventually go mainstream.
Berkeley is also home to a large South Asian community, as evidenced by an abundance
of sari shops on University Ave and a large number of excellent Indian restaurants.
