In-Depth Information
The oh-so-English Tudor-style Pelican Inn is Muir Beach's only commercial establish-
ment. Hikers, cyclists and families come for pub lunches inside its timbered restaurant and
cozy bar, perfect for a pint, a game of darts and warming up beside the open fire. The Brit-
ish fare is respectable, but nothing mind-blowing - it's the setting that's magical. Upstairs
are seven luxe rooms (from $206) with cushy half-canopy beds.
Stinson Beach
Just 5 miles north of Muir Beach, Stinson Beach is positively buzzing on warm weekends.
The town flanks Hwy 1 for about three blocks and is densely packed with galleries, shops,
eateries and B&Bs. The beach itself is often blanketed with fog, and when the sun's shin-
ing it's blanketed with surfers, families and gawkers. There are views of Point Reyes and
San Francisco on clear days, and the beach is long enough for a vigorous stroll.

Stinson Beach BEACH
( MAP GOOGLE MAP )
Three-mile-long Stinson Beach is a popular surf spot, but swimming is advised from late
May to mid-September only; for updated weather and surf conditions call 415-868-1922.
The beach is one block west of Hwy 1.
Red Rock Beach BEACH
( MAP GOOGLE MAP )
Around 1 mile south of Stinson Beach is Red Rock Beach. It's a clothing-optional beach
that attracts smaller crowds, probably because it can only be accessed by a steep trail from
Hwy 1.
