HIKING & CYCLING THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
Walking or cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito is a fun way to avoid traffic,
get some great ocean views and bask in that refreshing Marin County air. It's a fairly easy
journey, mostly flat or downhill when heading north from San Francisco (cycling back to
the city involves one big climb out of Sausalito). You can also simply hop on a ferry back
to SF.
The trip is about 4 miles from the south end of the bridge and takes less than an hour.
Pedestrians have access to the bridge's east walkway between 5am and 9pm daily (until
6pm in winter). Cyclists generally use the west side, except on weekdays between 5am
and 3:30pm, when they must share the east side with pedestrians (who have the right-of-
way). After 9pm (6pm in winter), cyclists can still cross the bridge on the east side
through a security gate. Check the bridge website ( www.goldengatebridge.org/bikesbridge/
bikes.php ) for changes.
For more ambitious cyclists, the Cal Park Hill Tunnel is a safe subterranean passage
from Larkspur (another ferry terminus) to San Rafael.
More information and resources are available at the websites of the San Francisco Bi-
cycle Coalition ( www.sfbike.org ) and the Marin County Bicycle Coalition
( www.marinbike.org ).
Eating
Bridgeway Blvd is packed with moderately priced cafes, a few budget ethnic food options
and some more expensive bay-view restaurants.

Boasting a cuisine of 'ethnic confusion,' the Indian fusion dishes here incorporate Mexic-
an, Italian and Caribbean ingredients and will bowl you over with their flavor and creativ-
ity. Think Punjabi enchilada with curried sweet potato or spinach and mushroom ravioli
with mango and rose petal alfredo sauce. All diets (vegan, gluten-free, etc) are graciously
accommodated.
